Is your brain still at work?
Share
Have you ever crawled into bed completely exhausted, only to realize your brain never got the memo? Your body is finally still, but your mind is replaying tomorrow’s schedule, unfinished tasks, emails, laundry, kids, work… basically everything except relaxing.
There’s actually a reason this can make intimacy feel difficult. When we’re stressed, our nervous system shifts into a more alert, “get things done” state. Your brain is prioritizing whatever it thinks needs your attention—not necessarily connection, pleasure, or intimacy.
Stress can contribute to muscle tension, changes in breathing, and difficulty focusing, which can make it harder to stay present and enjoy pleasurable sensations.
And here’s something important: desire doesn’t always come first. For many people, especially when life is busy, desire can show up after they begin feeling relaxed, connected, and physically engaged. So waiting around for that magical moment when you suddenly “feel in the mood” doesn’t always work.
That doesn’t mean you’re broken, you’re not attracted to your partner, or something is wrong with your relationship. Sometimes your nervous system simply needs a transition from “What needs to get done?” to “What feels good right now?”
That transition might look like sitting together for ten minutes without your phones, taking a warm shower or bath, giving each other a massage without expecting it to lead anywhere, using a favorite massage oil or candle as part of a relaxing ritual, or simply spending a few minutes stretching and taking some deep breaths. If you’re flying solo, a body massager can also be part of a self-care routine that helps you reconnect with your body and release some of the tension you’ve been carrying.
The goal isn’t to create the perfect evening or force yourself to be in the mood. It’s about creating enough space for your mind and body to slow down so you can actually be present.
Because intimacy isn’t another task to check off your list. Sometimes, slowing down is the first step toward feeling connected, comfortable, and receptive to pleasure.
And honestly? You deserve that pause.
